WELCOME TO THE AMELIA LITTLE LEAGUE WEBSITE - BEAUMONT, TX
Amelia Little League was first chartered in 1968 and has been in operation continuously since then. We have baseball programs for players ages 5-18 and softball for girls ages 5-16. Registration for the spring season is held in early January and the season begins in March and runs through May. Registration for fall ball is held in August and the season starts mid-September and runs through mid-November. The league is run entirely by unpaid volunteers and we are always looking for help. You can help in the concession stands, help maintain the grounds and fields, be an umpire, help with this website and many other areas. You can also help by buying a sponsor sign, sponsoring a team or just making a tax-deductible donation. Check back here for news about the league and upcoming events.

HURRICANE IKE TAKES ITS TOLL ON AMELIA FACILITIES
It was almost deja vu Hurricane Rita in 2005 as once again our facilities took a heavy hit as Hurricane Ike came crashing ashore early Saturday morning, Sept. 13. While this causes a major financial hardship for our league we must keep in mind that many others in our area suffered much worse at the hands of Ike. Many of our neighbors lost their houses and all possessions and a few even lost their lives. The basic necessities such as food and water are at a premium now while millions wait to have their power restored which went out late Friday night and into Saturday. Our prayers and thoughts go out to all of these. You can view more photos of the damages at our facilities by clicking on "albums". These were taken Saturday afternoon.

FIELD WORK DAY RESCHEDULED
THE WORK DAY SCHEDULED FOR AUG. 30 HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO SATURDAY SEPT. 6 STARTING AT 8 AM. ******************************************************************************************************************* We need a few good men and/or women to help out with some minor projects at our complex on SATURDAY AUG. 30, 2008, beginning at 8 AM. I know it's Labor Day weekend but we thought that since we're having fall ball registration that day we could get some other stuff done. Here's the list (there may be more that I'm not aware of):
* Move all softball kitchen equipment and materials from field house back to concession stand. * Clean out field house - it's a mess (would probably take a couple of people 2 hours after the softball stuff is moved). * Cut down the small trees beginning to grow in the fence line on Eldridge and also on some of the fields (bring cutters). * Cut weeds/grass along all field fence lines (the mower cannot get close enough; bring trimmers). * Spray weed killer on field fence lines and under bleachers (bring sprayers, we have only one). * Place a 4 X 4 support beam near the faucets at the softball minor field and the baseball AA field (to prevent them from getting run into and broken by the mower). * Move the portable bleachers back to where they belong; they were moved for repairs (we would need about 8 or 10 men to do this manually; we cannot afford to try to drag them with a vehicle and break them after they were just fixed).
Remember, grounds maintenance goes on year round, not just during the playing season. Please come out and help and invite another Amelia LL parent or coach or friend. Thanks.

LYONDELLBASELL "GLOBAL CARE DAY" IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BEAUMONT ROTARY CLUB
As many of you already know, Saturday, July 19, 2008 was a memorable day for Amelia Little League. That was the day volunteers from LyondellBasell Beaumont and the Rotary Club ofBeaumont teamed up to make some major improvements and renovations to our facilities during this “Global Care Day”. They even provided some breakfast goodies and drinks throughout the day and a great barbecue lunch. However, unless you were there, you probably have no idea of the scope of this project so here it is: - Approximately $14,000 was donated by the two organizations to accomplish the work.
- Approximately 120 LyondellBasell and Rotary Club volunteers showed up.
- More than 1200 man-hours were spent working that day.
- Several volunteers from these two organizations put in many hours weeks before July 19 in developing the scope of work and doing some preparatory work. Additionally, some volunteers returned after July 19 to do some clean-up work.
- 300 tons of caliche was used.
- 20 cubic yards of concrete was used.
- 15 gallons of green paint was used.
- Miscellaneous tools, safety equipment and supplies provided.
Here’s what was accomplished: - About 3” of concrete was poured on the softball concession stand and rest rooms floor to raise it up to prevent flooding which has occurred in the past.
- The softball press box room walls were insulated and sheeted and the room was divided into two separate parts. We now have a separate secure equipment storage room there.
- The baseball parking lot road was resurfaced with caliche and compacted.
- A drainage trench was dug and a new drainpipe installed in the north end of the baseball parking lot to replace the crushed one.
- Installed concrete walkways from the baseball parking lot fence to the concessions stands and bleachers.
- Straightened the steel supports and made weld repairs to several of the portable bleachers.
- Replaced bad or missing bleacher boards on many of the portable bleachers.
- Made repairs to fencing and gates at all fields.
- Painted bleachers and concession stand exterior.
The workday began at 6 AM and it was truly amazing to see so many people showing up to help. Itwas just as amazing to see these volunteers spread throughout our complex going about their business. Many of them stayed until the evening hours, giving up their Saturday to help us. The workday was very well organized and it showed. These are the people who made it happen: Trapper Jennings - Global Care Day Coordinator Randy Tatum - LyondellBasell Plant Manager Bill Miller - Concrete Coordinator Nelson Leday - Carpenter Coordinator Chad Mirabella - Bleacher Repair Coordinator Luis Espinoza - Paint Coordinator Greg Pearson - Fence Coordinator Daniel Mikolay - Rotary Club Coordinator Carrie Cunningham - Amelia Little League Coordinator To all of you and the other volunteers from your organizations we are truly grateful. THANK YOU LYONDELLBASELL AND ROTARY CLUB!!! Click on “albums” to see more pictures from the workday.

JUNIOR, SENIOR AND BIG LEAGUE ALL STARS HAVE TERRIFIC POST-SEASON
This was one of the more successful All-Star seasons in recent history! Big League captured the State Title and took 2nd at Regionals. Senior League won the Section 2 title and took 2nd in the Texas East State Tournament. Our Junior League Nationals team also won the Section 2 title and took 3rd in the Texas East State Tournament. Way to go everyone! This success highlights the hard work and effort everyone has done to make Beaumont Baseball/AWE one of the best baseball communities in our area. Way to go! We all should be proud!

*** UPDATE ***BEAUMONT ROTARY CLUB AND LYONDELL COMMIT RESOURCES TO HELP OUR LEAGUE - JULY 19, 2008
*** PLEASE NOTE START TIME IS 6 AM (that's when the Lyondell and Rotary Club people will get there) *** Even if you can come only for a short time, that would be great. Through the efforts of Carrie Cunningham and other board members, the Beaumont Rotary Club and Lyondell have agreed to provide some funds, equipment and supplies to help our league make some relatively major repairs and renovations around our complex. The work is scheduled for SATURDAY, JULY 19, starting around 6 AM until ???. We need to have a large contingent of Amelia LL volunteers ready to go to work that day in conjunction with the Rotary Club and Lyondell volunteers who show up. It would be extremely embarrassing to our organization to have these two entities volunteer their resources and have very little representation from our own league to help. Please mark your calendar and show up that day. Here is a list of items expected to be done that day: Elevating the Softball Press box/ concession stand to address drainage problems Repair all fences. Repair all bleachers. Add concrete "skirts" to high traffic areas around bleachers and restrooms. Add equipment room to Softball press box area. Repairs to the Softball concession stand from break-in. Repair culverts in baseball parking lots and re-dig ditches for drainage. Resurface the parking lot.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!
The post-season tournament play has come to an end for Amelia LL. While our teams did not win any District 12 titles, our volunteers are, without a doubt, champions. It took many hours of dedicated work by many volunteers to get our facilities ready to play each home tournament game. These people were not looking for any gratitude or acknowledgement, they were just doing what needed to be done to showcase Amelia LL in the best possible light to our visitors. What did they do? Here's a list, by no means complete; * Take the responsibility to manage/coach and prepare a team and make sure all the required paperwork is collected and approved. * Recruit people to work in the concession stands and take the time to go and buy the necessary supplies. * Work in the concession stands then clean-up the kitchen after each game. * Clean the restrooms. * Cut the grass and rake/drag the infield dirt areas. * Pick up the trash. * Perform the duties of a Tournament Director. * Umpire the games. * Announce the games and keep score. * Came to watch the games and cheer on the teams. A GREAT BIG "THANK YOU" TO ALL OF YOU!

IMPORTANT LIGHTNING SAFETY NOTE
The potential for thunderstorms with dangerous lightning is always a threat in southeast Texas. The following procedure will be in effect while games are being played. This procedure applies to baseball (including junior, senior and big league) and softball games being played.
1. The lightning meter will be turned on at the scorer's table in the boy's Major League press box when any threatening weather is present. 2. An air horn will be kept at the scorer's table. 3. The umpire at the game will make the decision to postpone or cancel the games based on the lightning meter data. 4. The umpire will sound the air horn to stop play. The signal to stop play will be 3 short blasts of the air horn. When sounded, all teams must leave the field and enter the dugouts. 5. When the threat has passed the umpire will sound the air horn to resume play. The signal to resume play will be 1 long blast of the air horn.

A LETTER FROM DAVE MORROW, PRES. OF BEAUMONT BASEBALL (13-16 AGE GROUP)
This article is directed to those parents who have baseball players who will someday play their Little League baseball in the 13-16 age group. At that age, District 12 (our district) allows Amelia and West End Little Leagues to combine players in order to have enough teams to have a competitive league. If you don't already know it, their games are played on the "big" field adjacent to our "A" and girl's softball fields at the end of Morgan Rd. This field is currently a showpiece thanks to the work of a very few people but it cannot continue to be done that way. For many years our leagues just could not work together effectively for the benefit of the combined league. You may have heard of any number of reasons for this. The bottom line is that we MUST work together if we expect the league to survive. Please read Dave's letter in the "handouts" section and consider joining the team if your child is already playing or will be playing in this league. If you still have some years left in the younger age groups you should seriously consider helping out there. Amelia Little League has a very large complex of playing fields, bleachers, parking areas and buildings, all of which need caring for. Team managers, coaches, umpires, officers, concession stand workers, committee persons, etc, are also needed and a few people cannot do it.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT - VOLUNTEERING
Did you ever think about
* Who gets all the paperwork ready for registration?
* Who arranges for the registration and meeting venues?
* Who gets everything ready for the candy fund-raiser?
* Who gets the concession stands ready for the city inspection?
* Who orders the equipment, uniforms, etc.?
* Who organizes, issues, and takes back the equipment?
* Who gets the supplies for the concession stands?
* Who schedules the concession stand volunteers?
* Who schedules the umpires?
* Who prepares the playing schedules?
* Who reconciles the league checking account?
* Who cleans the toilets?
* Who cleans up the trash?
* Who cuts the grass (all year)?
* Who repairs the plumbing, electrical, etc.?
Have I bored you? I can assure you the VOLUNTEERS who do these things are not bored and the list above is just a thumbnail sketch of what gets done "behind the scenes". I encourage you to make a sincere effort to help the league when you are asked - in fact, don't wait to be asked - VOLUNTEER!! Most jobs do not require special skills so any of us can do them. The league needs and appreciates your support. Thank you.

NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR YOUTH SPORTS
These days, with so many examples of poor sportsmanship readily available Ð whether itÕs on the television screen or at a professional, collegiate or high school game Ð itÕs becoming increasingly tricky to teach kids this important aspect of youth athletics. Being a consistent model of good sportsmanship, and instilling those values in your children, will produce young athletes that coaches will love having on their team; that players will enjoy playing with and competing against; and that officials will enjoy calling games for. ItÕll also make you proud to watch them in action.

EMPLOYER DONATIONS CAN HELP THE LEAGUE
I'm sure most of you know that a lot of companies will make donations to non-profit organizations like Little League. Many link the donation to volunteer hours performend by employees. Please check with your employers to see if they have programs like this and see what it takes to obtain a donation. In most cases all it takes is completing a form. There are a lot of areas at our facilities that need improvement - but it takes money. Thanks for your continued support.

The new field lighting and field house were dedicated in a ceremony held Monday, September 18, 2006 at the boy's major league field. Jennifer Cartabona, the Baseball Tomorrow Fund Grant Coordinator, presented the league a ceremonial check for the project which was completed a few weeks ago. Local TV channels 6 and 12 were kind enough to give the league video coverage which was then broadcast on the 10 PM news. Also, Lee Stinson of Lee's Photography, volunteered his time to take pictures during the event and provided the league with CD's of the pictures. The three pictures shown here are just a few of those taken by Lee. The TV news segments and Lee's pictures will be forwarded to BTF for their use. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way and to those who attended the ceremony.

AMELIA LITTLE LEAGUE RECEIVES "BASEBALL TOMOROW FUND" GRANT
Great news for our league. "Baseball Tomorrow Fund", an organization established by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association, has awarded Amelia Little League $95,692.11. The grant will be used to purchase and install new Musco lighting for the boy's major league field and to construct a new 20' X 40' cement block storage building to replace the one blown away by Hurricane Rita last September. The building will be divided into two halves, one for baseball and one for softball and will be built in the area between the boy's T-Ball and major league fields and the girl's major league field. Completion of both projects is expected by mid-summer. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Baseball Tomorrow Fund on behalf of Amelia Little League.

WALL-BALL PROHIBITED
At the board meeting last night members voted unanimously to ban all wall-ball playing at the league facilities. This was done for several reasons such as:
* damaging the vents on the restroom
* throwing rocks through the vent holes (at least one person was hit by a rock while in the men's room)
* fighting
* getting injured
* distracting the players in the 3rd base dugout
It becomes the responsibility of all league members, managers, coaches and parents to enforce this ruling. I'm asking for your help in doing this. Thanks.
